Hello, everyone! I’m so glad you’re joining me today! I know I said that this week I would wrap up the series called “So You Want To Be A Photographer” today, aimed at encouraging other creatives and aspiring photographers to make the leap and follow their dreams… but this session was just too good and I couldn’t wait to post it!! Trust me though, you WON’T be disappointed. This pair… oh man. They were a dream! The light was perfect. The setting was beautiful… it was like the trifecta of greatness!
So you know when you meet someone new, and you just feel how authentic and genuine they are that you immediately feel comfortable with them? Well that’s how it was when I met Daniel. See, I was new to Hermosillo. I didn’t have any friends other than my husband to be honest. At work, when I was still a Clinical Supervisor, one of the other therapists discovered that I was wanting to find a place to exercise after work and she recommended that I check out the local DeRose Method School called Cultura Alto Rendimiento. At this point, I had no idea what the DeRose Method was. I had previously had a bad experience with a local yoga studio after having hurt myself due to the teachers inexperience and unprofessionalism, so I was wary at the idea of another “yoga” studio. But she assured me that this school wasn’t that and that it was something else, something much better that she thought I would really love. So one day, I just decided to reach out and go to one of their try-out classes to see what it was all about. Now, I’m a pretty awkward person. Like Zoey Deschanel type awkward except not as charming, much taller and as one of my best friends put it… “a baby giraffe learning to walk” because I was always tripping over myself and falling haha Oh, and a total introvert. So when I arrived early, I sat in a dark corner like a weirdo waiting for everyone to arrive. I took out a book I was reading and completely ignored all of the people arriving and waiting as the instructors got there.
I realized then that I was not at any ordinary “yoga” school… that the DeRose Method WAS indeed something different- something much more inclusive, authentic, profound and that the people who practiced this proposal really did live what they were teaching.
When Daniel arrived, he greeted every single person there with a hug and then came over and sat down right next to me. He asked if I was new and I told him that I was referred to them by Marcela, the gal from the clinic. We got to chatting, which for anyone who doesn’t know what it’s like to be an introvert, is complete terror because small talk doesn’t go over well with our kind. I’m honestly surprised that he didn’t get super weirded out, or maybe he did but was good at hiding it hahaha Anyways, he spent a few minutes talking to me and from that minute on, I could just feel how much of a genuinely caring person he was. We went inside and I thought that we were going to begin the class, but the group spent a good ten minutes talking to each other and socializing before the class even began. I realized then that I was not at any ordinary “yoga” school… that the DeRose Method WAS indeed something different- something much more fun, authentic, profound and that the people who practiced this proposal really did live what they were teaching. All of the instructors there, including Giovana, had the same genuine and joyful demeanor that Daniel did. I was really taken aback and my curiosity was peaked.
In a city where I felt totally weird and strange and uncomfortable, I found connection, authenticity and friendship here at this school. They made me feel welcome. They were different. They were caring. They were genuine. And I loved that they hosted cultural activities like movie nights, gourmet parties sans alcohol, nights at the theatre etc. I’ll go into detail in a later post about what the DeRose Method is, but I can honestly say that being a part of this group of people and practicing it on a daily basis was one of the best decisions I have ever made…. and dang! The exercise element of the method is KILLER! My muscles have never been worked so hard in my life! Not even when I played soccer or was active in sports!
Anyways, it was an absolute pleasure to be able to capture their admiration and affection for one another in such a beautiful setting. These two have done so much for me so it was the least I could do for them! They probably don’t even realize how deep they have moved me leading by example and showing me kindness just when I needed it. They had the courage to bring something new to a city where certain things and ideas are pretty set in the culture already and they are spreading sincere joy, authenticity and a generally healthy lifestyle one day at a time. Thank you for all you do and know that you really are making a difference in this world! I love you guys! You’re the best in the west! haha
I edited this session in record time because their joy was totally contagious and I couldn’t stop smiling at how cute these two were! For anyone that’s curious, there are DeRose Method Schools in NYC, Hawaii, Spain, England, Italy, South America (several), and one in all of Mexico (the one I attend in Hermosillo).
Until next week, friends! I’ll be sharing the third installment of the 4 part series “So You Want To Be A Photographer”called The Importance Of A Strong Why (as in WHY am I doing this? What is my motivation?). So if you’re just joining me, you can catch up by reading part 1: Finding My Passion and part 2: A Lesson In Taking A Risk. Hope you’ll join me next week!
